News release from the University of Saint Francis:

MLK’s nephew guest speaker for USF’s Legacy of Peace Luncheon

(May 28, 2013) – Dr. Derek King, the nephew of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a university professor, certified conflict reconciliation trainer and worldwide speaker on non-violence, will be the guest speaker for the Legacy of Peace Luncheon at the USF Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, June 5 at noon.

King’s luncheon speech occurs 50 years to the day since his famous uncle addressed the Fort Wayne region in the same facility on the subject of social justice and racial equality.

The Queens Literature and Art Club of Fort Wayne will present a series of inspiring monologues focused upon education, commitment and success as part of the luncheon agenda. A buffet meal will be served in the center’s Ballroom.

Legacy of Peace Luncheon tickets are $12, and can be purchased from the Fort Wayne Urban League, 2135 S. Hanna St., Fort Wayne, or at legacyofpeace.eventbrite.com through May 31. Fort Wayne’s Martin Luther King Jr. Club is the event sponsor.

The luncheon occurs in association with the university’s Future of Education event, with sessions at 4:30 and 7:15 in the USF Performing Arts Center that evening. Both sessions will examine the directions education will take, with the second session emphasizing education as a catalyst for community peace. The second session includes a complimentary boxed meal. The Future of Education is free with registration at futureofeducation2013.eventbrite.com.

“Dr. King’s philosophy mirrors that of the university in its focus on peace and justice, the very qualities that we as Franciscans laud and hold sacred,” said University of Saint Francis President Sister M. Elise Kriss, OSF. “We are proud to hold this luncheon and education event in the place where 50 years ago, an icon for the advancement of peace and social justice, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., stood to bring his message to the people of Fort Wayne.”

The University of Saint Francis, founded in 1890 as a comprehensive university in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs through the School of Health Sciences, School of Arts and Sciences, Keith Busse School of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership, School of Professional Studies and School of Creative Arts. The university’s College of Adult Learning designs focused curriculum for working adults by offering online and accelerated programs, through its Virtual, Fort Wayne and Crown Point campuses. More than 2,300 students from a broad geographic region attend USF for its academic excellence.

To put that percentage in perspective, we borrow that much money every 28 days. If the President can’t cut that much, he’ll never cut anything.”
