News release from Carroll High School:

Carroll High School art student to be honored at nation’s capital
Photograph to be hung in the Capitol building

(May 29, 2013) – Carroll High School Sophomore Anneke (AH-nick-ah) Lehman is being honored as the winner of the District 3 Congressional Art Competition. Her photograph titled Frozen in Time will be honored at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 26th, 2013 at the Capitol Visitor Center. Anneke’s photograph will be visible in the Nation’s Capital for the next year.

Anneke Lehman

Anneke and her family recently moved to Fort Wayne from Grand Rapids, Michigan. When she was assigned a project to take a long exposure photograph, she naturally gravitated towards the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge in downtown Fort Wayne. Anneke says “the lights show something beautiful about Fort Wayne.”

Nicole Croy, Anneke’s photography teacher, says that “It’s a great opportunity to show her work and represent our area of the state.”

According to Congressman Marlin Stutzman’s office, each spring the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. The winner will also receive two free airline tickets compliments of Southwest Airlines to fly from Indianapolis to Washington, D.C. to attend the national reception. The theme for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition is An Artistic Discovery. Artwork accepted mediums are Paintings, Drawings, Collage, Prints, Mixed Media, Computer Generated Art and Photography. Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution.

  • “The President’s doomsday scenarios are of his own choosing,” Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., argued in response to Cutter’s email. “The sequester will cut 2.3 percent, or $85 billion, from the massive $3.55 trillion the federal government is projected to spend this year alone. To put that percentage in perspective, we borrow that much money every 28 days. If the President can’t cut that much, he’ll never cut anything.”
