Final USF planetarium shows this weekend during festival

(July 17, 2013) – The last set of public shows offered at the Edwin Clark Schouweiler Memorial Planetarium at the University of Saint Francis during the Three Rivers Festival are coming up Friday and Saturday.

“Explorers of Mauna Kea” will be the fifth grade/adult planetarium Three Rivers Festival show. Viewers will travel to the big island of Hawaii and the tallest mountain in the world, Mauna Kea, home to one of the world’s largest collection of astronomical telescopes.

Against the backdrop of Hawaiian legend and lore, the show will introduce viewers to several of today’s cutting-edge astronomers, their instruments and recent discoveries relating to the expanding universe, comets and planets around other stars. Two live show segments will demonstrate new telescope technology and the importance of location for astronomical research.

The following shows will be offered:

Friday, family matinee, 3:30 p.m.—“A Solar System Adventure Tour” for students in grades 2-4 and their adult friends; 7 p.m.—“Explorers of Mauna Kea”

Saturday, family matinee, 3:30 p.m.—“Zubenelgenubi’s Magical Sky” for children in pre-kindergarten through first grade and their adult friends

Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for children under 18 and $3 for senior citizens. The maximum charge is $14 per family. An additional $1 discount will be given to Fort Wayne Astronomical Society members and visitors with Three Rivers Festival buttons. Purchase tickets at the door.
