Press release from the Galloping Gobbler 4 Miler:

Galloping Gobbler 4 Miler Tops 2000 Participants

Mitch Harper, Race Director for the Galloping Gobbler 4 Miler, has announced that the race has set a new record number of registered walkers and runners. Harper said the number of participants pre-registered for the Thanksgiving Day Run and Walk has topped 2,000.

The Thanksgiving Day event has already been ranked by past participation numbers as northeast Indiana’s second largest running event. However, Harper said the race is on track to double the number of runners from last year.

Harper said that the numbers indicate that the 2010 race will probably rank as one of the 30 largest 4 mile races in the nation according to statistics kept by RunningUSA and USA Track & Field.

The race was first held in 2003 and attracted 210 participants in its inaugural year.

The race starts on Leesburg Road near the Hutzell Athletic Center on the campus of the University of St. Francis. Participants head south on Leesburg Road to the entrance of the historic Lindenwood Cemetery. Most of the race takes place on the winding roads within the beautiful, wooded cemetery before runners head back to the finish line on the campus of the University of St. Francis.

The first 180 finishers receive a loaf of pumpkin spiced bread. This year, finishers will also receive chocolate milk from Prairie Farms Dairy, part of the “Winners Drink Milk” sm promotion of milk as a sports recovery drink. Recent published research shows milk to be a superior fluid for athlete recovery after strenuous athletic activity.

The race features an RFID timed start and finish. The timing RFID will be attached to each runners bib number.

Mr. Casey Shafer designed this year’s t-shirt. Mr. Shafer is a fine arts graduate of the University of St. Francis and a past member of the University of St. Francis cross-country team. Last year’s t-shirt was designed by Fort Wayne artist Terry Ratliff.
