Domestic Dispute / Stabbing Investigation / Barricaded Suspect

On Saturday, 4/2/2016, at approximately 1:45 AM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 2000 block of St. Mary’s Avenue reference a domestic dispute involving a suspect armed with a knife. Initial reports indicate the male/adult suspect arrived at his girlfriend’s residence and forced entry by shattering a glass sliding door. The suspect entered the residence and there was a disturbance inside. During the disturbance, the suspect displayed a knife and cut/stabbed two adult victims.

Officers arrived on scene and the suspect barricaded himself inside a second floor bedroom. Officers safely evacuated everyone from inside the residence and verbally ordered the suspect to exit the bedroom. The suspect reported he had a hostage inside the bedroom and refused to exit. As officers were attempting to negotiate with the suspect, he started a fire inside the bedroom. In fear there was a hostage inside the bedroom, the officers forced the door open. The officers rescued the suspect from the bedroom and determined he was alone and did not have a hostage. The Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

The two victims from the initial cutting/stabbing are in stable condition and being treated at a local hospital. Three police officers are being treated at a local hospital reference smoke inhalation. One of the officers is in serious condition and two officers are in stable condition. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition reference a self-inflicted cut to his neck and smoke inhalation.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department and Fort Wayne Police Department are currently processing the scene and collecting evidence. Both agencies will work in conjunction to interview the victims and witnesses involved in this investigation. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police, the City of Fort Wayne Fire Department, and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. There are no additional details at this time.
